....Elder Ketchup

What's up Fam,

First off I appreciate all of your emails. They are so fun to read and I like to hear about what you are all doing. This week was pretty good. Except the hot water broke last Tuesday so I've been taking freezing cold showers every morning.... it sucks. It's honestly the worst. And it probably wont be fixed for a while... so cold showers for days I guess. The water before was actually bettter than I expected. but now its ice. but anyway It got humid yesterday for the first time and confirmed the fact that I hate humidity. So the summer will be a lot of fun. Every Thursday we do like a correlation meeting with the branch presidency and as we were leaving the Branch Presidency assigned me to speak on Sunday. So Friday and Saturday during my personal study time I had to prepare a 10 minute talk on missionary work. I actually wasnt as nervous as I would be for a talk in english cause here everyone knows Im a little newbe American, So there isnt as much pressure as there normally would be. But it was good. I used an Ensign so that helped me. But I definitely feel better this week about everything. I mean I definitley am still overwhelmed at how much I have to learn, but I created a plan and am just going to focus on staying on my plan and staying productive each day. Because I have this mountain I need to climb and I cant be worried about climbing the mountain in one day. So I just have to take each day. I always like P-day cause obviously I get a break from everything but I also get to talk to other missionaries and just talk to other people that are new. And the other missionaries always give me advice and I can see where I will be one day. So its all good.

The food situation is good. I eat every night when I get back to the apartment. I usually make eggs or cereal... and eat chips or something. So im eatting lunch and dinner. Breakfast... I eat a little orange or grab a handle full of dry cereal as im walking out the door so I think thats going well. And Money definitly goes farther here so that $13 charge that you saw last week got me 1.5 liter coke, doritos bag, cereal, and 4 AAA batteries. But
the thing is, is we get about $1800 pesos a month and that is around just over a $100 dollars. So I have to learn to stretch my money to last amonth. I think I will use my debit card once a week at Subway for lunch on P-days. So there is a charge on that for this week. But I dont think there is anything that I want. I will probably know if I want anything much later in the mission. So dont worry about anything that I want right now cause I cant think of anything. But Im sure things will come as I get farther into the mission. The mission offered me sheets the first day but I told them I already had some so I didnt take theirs. And that pillow in the picture is the pillow they gave me. So my pillow I brought is still in the packaging. I probably wont start using it until after my training. But like I said the weather is starting to warm up. The bugs are only bad in the evenings. So we apply bug spray around 5-6ish at night. But there isnt any weird bugs or anything. Any my companions name is Eric Butler. And he is from Brigham City. He was a swimmer in high school. Thats about all I know about him haha. And yeah the town we are in is called Fotana and the area in the mission is called Fontanegro. Overall the language is coming. I can definitley tell a difference from my first couple days here until now. First couple days or just that week everything sounded like giberish. And no I can start to hear words. Not nessicarly understand the words but I can hear people a little better. But I think if I stick to my plan I will be just fine. I am just writting like 15ish word every day in my planner and trying to learn 15 words each day. And then during language study I do activities or read this text book thing that the MTC gave me. So hopefully with that combo I will start progressing and learning. I guess I'll find out.

Any way everything is going well for me. Nothing too crazy or funny this week. This week I am going on a division with the zone leaders so maybe where ever I go they will have warm water. But the guy im splitting with is in his last 2 transfers. He just got his flight plans today to go home. So that will be fun to be with him for a day or two. Oh also a guy in church or in the branch calls me Elder Ketchup.. but overall people here butcher the name the same way people in america would butcher the name. As far as the actual work that Elder Butler and I are doing, its going pretty well. We havent had any investigators come to church yet though. There is a family that will get baptised once they get married. Once they get married they will get baptized. They are really cool. There is another little family which is a husband and wife (i think they are married) and they have a 2ish year old daughter and they own a bakery. And usually after we teach them they give us a little pastery. And Saturday they gave us this pastery thing that was bread with powder sugar on it and in the middle was this stuff called ''Dulce de Leche'' which is pretty much just non-sticky carmel. SO good. But overall its going good. I hope you all are doing good. Keep me updated on all your adventures. I think about you guys all the time. Stay cool.

Love,

Elder Keicher

Primero Semana en el Campo

Buenos Dias!!

Well my life is definitely a lot different now. haha But i am here in Argentina. My area I'm assigned too is called Fontanegro but the city is called Fontana. It is right next to Resistencia. The mission office is in the center of Resistencia and I am about a 15 minute bus ride to the mission office. So we had our flight situation which was fun. For the flight from Atlanta to Buenos Aires I sat in the middle in the middle so that wasnt too fun cause it was a 10 hour flight and I only got like an hour and a half hours of sleep. And like I said there were 2 missionaries that threw their trac cell phones away while getting off and that looks pretty suspisious when 2 americans dressed in white shirts and ties are thowing cell phones away so all us missionaries got swarmed withArgentinan airport officials and they all took our passports so that we wouldnt leave. And it took a while to explain to them who we were and why those elders were throwing cell phones away. But it turned out okay.
Then when I boarded my plane to resistencia I sat next to a guy named Maurio who lived in Argentina and i talked to him the whole flight. He owned like 20 ice cream shops around Argentina. I shared with him what I was doing in Argentina and we just talked about what we believed. He was Evangelic and at the end of my flight I got his address and name and gave it to the office elders to use as a refrence to who ever is serving in his area. Then after us missionaries got off the flight we meet President and Sister Franco and they took us to the mission office. We ate empanadas and then stayed in a hotel that night. Wedneeday we all got interviewed by Presdient Franco but it was only like a 6 minute thing. But he is super nice and cool. I got my tainer, his name is Elder Butler. He has been out for a year and is from Utah. So I am glad i got an american trainer. But he is cool and we get along. He is 19 and graduated same year as me. Idk what else to say he is pretty normal so thats good haha.

Anyways my area like i said is just on the outskirts of the city of Resistencia. But Elder Butler said that this mission is the poorest part of Argentina. And I have definitely seen that. Its like you see pictures of poor places all the time but its a whole different thing to be walking the streets and see it in person. The church in my area is alright. We have a branch and on Suday there were 30ish people there. But the members are awesome... at least I think so I cant understand them or really anyone so I just go off of what I think and what Elder Bulter tells me. But I have been fed lunch everyday I've been here except last Thursday. The food is different but its good. Its nothing really too crazy, just meat and potatoes and Pomela which is gratefruit. And I am going to have to get use to that juice cause thats all we drink. But its a little different than the gratefruit in America. Its yellow and doesnt taste as bad cause Im not a fan of grapefruit. But today we are in the city cause we had to go to the misision office to get rent for the month and then we ate at Subway. Funny story. I was eatting lunch there and of course I got a coke with my sandwich (my first coke here) and when we were leavng I went and refilled it up and got a lid and as I was leaving the lady from subway started yelling at me. And I just stared at her cause I had no idea what she said and Elder Butler was at the door waiting for me. So I didnt now what to say so I just said "esta bein, buenos dias" (Im good, have a good day) and left. The subway lady just rolled her eyes at me and went back to work. I was so confused but elder butler told me just a little bit ago that she said I only bought one drink and that I needed to pay for refilling my drink. So I thought that was funny. Oops!

But yeah we pretty much walk everywhere and we use the bus as well. My shoes are fine. I will probably polish them today. My warts are fine. Today is the first day I started to apply the medicine the doctor gave me. The people in my area.... or just argentinans are weird. I dont really understand them yet. Some I can tell are really nice. But we will have lessons with some people and I have no idea what is being said but it always seems like they are uninterested just by looking at their facial expressions and then after ward Elder Butler will be like " well that went great" and go on to say the things they said and I am always surprised cause I just have no idea whats going on. Thats honestly the hardest part and biggest trail for me right now. That I cant contirbute really anything and cant understand people. I just dont know how I will be able to be an effective missionary when I cant really do anything. But I just remind myself that this is my first week in the field. I cant wait until I can communicate and understand the people and not feel like the language is such a burden. Its hard to imagine that being a reality now but I know that there are other missionaries who are probably worse off than me and that eventually this will pass cause I am definitely not the first missionary to go through this and that I wont be the last either.

The weather is actually pretty nice right now. Its nice and sunny and not very humid. But my companion tells me that the heat will suck so cant wait for that. You can send mail to the mission office. Thats the way to do it. But I cant use pouch to send mail to you guys. But you can still send pouch to me. But send then letters or envelop packages to the mission office. Thats the best place for that. But like I said earlier I am serving in Fontana.I dont have a specific address but the main street in the town is Av. Alvear. Idk if that will help. But our church is on the street. I got to see a little bit of the Olympics on sunday for like 10 minutes when we went to lunch at a part member familys house. The TV had it on while they were finishing cooking. I got to see a little bit of mens vollyball and a little bit of gymnastics. So that was cool to see that. I didnt even know that it had started. They dont really care too much for the olympics here. Oh and its a rule that I cant play soccer... so wont be doing that really. But anyway I'll go. It was so nice hearing from you all. I hope you guys are doing great. I think of you guys a lot. Have a great week! Adios

Spread Some Light in This Dark World. Week 5 in the MTC (last week)

Last email from the USA(hopefully),

Hey fam,

So if the FBI thing goes through in the next couple days I will be leaving for Argentina on Monday. Everybody got their travel plans last Friday except for me. But if my plans are the same, I will be leaving the MTC at around 8 and the flight from SLC will leave I think around 2ish. Then we will get the Atlanta at around 7ish. Then our flight from Atlanta will leave at around 10:30ish and get to Buenos Aires 11 hours later. So ill probably be calling you guys from the Salt Lake Airport. But my plans could be different since my plane tickets are being bought like 4 days before I leave I dont know. Ill try to let you know if things are different when I get my plans.

So I got the carry on Kenzie dropped off. And I did get the card reader but I dont think I'll need any new SD readers. I already have 2 and Im just going to upload every week to drop box and organize them in folders there. I got the Stance socks today and they are awesome, thanks for doing that. I dont think I need anything else before I leave. I will be sending my package back to you guys either tomorrow or Friday. I am so STOKED to finally leave. I am starting to get nervous though because we just learned subjunctive in Spanish the other day, and its what people use like 70% of the time in spanish and its pretty difficult. haha So my first 12 weeks should be fun. Ill try to tell stories of me saying weird stuff to people. I already told an "investigator" that "Through Christ they can be forgiven of their fish." Pecado=sin and pescado=fish. So itll definitely be fun haha. I go in tomorrow to have the foot doctor (Dr. Jarmillo) look at my warts before I leave. He injected this like stuff that kills them and they are starting to turn black. But idk if they are ready to be taken out yet. He told me you usually have to wait 3 weeks to let the stuff kill the wart completely so Ill see what he says tomorrow about that. I saw Clint again yesterday at dinner before Choir so I ate with him. It was nice and we got to talk a little longer. I got my hair cut today and this lady that was like on a break was showing the lady cutting my hair these videos of baby Pandas. So that was kinda fun. I got to watch a facebook video of baby Pandas while getting my haircut. OH and last week an Elder in my district who has been having a hard time got the chance to do a 2 hour "companionship" study with his dad at the MTC. but I had to be his companions companion during all of it. And when we went to pick him up Elder Wiggens wanted to get a picture with his dad before he left. So his dad gave me his phone to take a picture and I felt so weird holding an Iphone. AND ITS ONLY BEEN 5 WEEKS. Like touching the screen felt so weird. I havent had any withdrawals from not having a phone and honestly I havent really thought about it and maybe thats why it felt so weird.

But anyway I loved this week. For Pioneer day in Utah, we had the National Tribute band as our Sunday devotional. It was actually weird because half the time it felt like a concert...and it was the sabbeth. But it was still so awesome. Besides Elder Bednar, I think that was my favorite devotional. We watched a really cool Elder Holland talk last night in which he gave to the MTC last year. It is entitled "Open Your Mouth". In it he talked about Joseph Smith and the first vision. He said, "To prevent the restoration of the gospel on the Earth, Satan exhorted all of his power that he had on Joshep Smith. If Satan had the power to kill someone, he wouldve. But he doesnt have the ability to do that. So he did the most powerful he can, he bound his tounge(JSH1:15) so he could not speak." Then Elder Holland so graceful stated, "OPEN YOUR MOUTH". So that is pretty centered to missionaries but that can apply to anyone. It relates to relationships, marriages, and being a member missionary. Opening your mouth doesnt have to mean to delcare repentance to others. But open your mouth and spread joy and happiness in this dark world. The world has enough sarcastic people and messed up people and people who wont spread joy and nice things. Its seems every other day I somehow hear of things happining in the world and its disgusting. Spread happiniess. BE CHARITABLE. Go out of your way to do something nice for a stranger. Thats all I got this week. Talk  to you Monday.  Ill probably not be able to email next week but the next one will be from another hemisphere. ETTE

Drive By High Five! Week 4 in the MTC

What a week!! So I'll just start off with our devotional this last Sunday night. All the missionaries were all together for it and we sang the opening hymn. The MTC president got up and said that for this devotional we were going to watch "Character of Christ" which was a talk given by Elder David A. Bednar (of the twelve Apostles) to the MTC like 5 years ago on Christmas morning. It is such a good talk and was the second time watching it since ive been here. But the coolest part was right after the video ended the lights came on and the organ started blasting and in came Elder Bednar. Everyone stood up and everyone was like loudly whispering cause from a far it would be hard to recognize who it was. I was like in the middlish. Anyway for the next hour he just held a Q & A with all the missionaries. Honestly was one of the coolest experiences I have been apart of. Ill share some of the things he said that I loved. Concerning spiritual gifts, "Spiritual gifts come when God trusts you and me to be in the right place. The self-centered mid-set of doing something good to get spiritual gifts only guarantees that you wont receive them." Also a missionary asked what we can do to be more charitable and practice having charity. Elder Bednar responded, "First off you cant practice having Charity. Because that implies an action. Charity isn't something we DO, it is something we have to become...it is more of a spiritual instinct than saying "Oh im going to be charitable today" ". I loved that because I think that being Charitable can fix the worlds problems because Charity is "the pure love of Christ." One thing that he actually says in the Character of Christ video is that "If you lose yourself in the service of others, somewhere you will find yourself... and you wont be looking for it." Also another than that I liked that he said is that, "We cant live off of borrowed light." I think that applies to a lot of missionaries here because a lot of them this is their first time away from home and the first time they are having to rely on their own testimony. And it will be even harder after they get back. Concerning prayer Bednar said, "If you pray, ask, and wait...you could be waiting for a long time." Ill let you guys read that the way you want. BUT FOR THE COOLEST part was after he left. We went back to our classrooms in 8m which is literally right infront of the entrance to the MTC. I told my companions that we should go and see if we can watch Elder Bednar drive away. So we went to the front and there were like 30-40 other missionaries who had the same idea as me. And like 2 minutes after we had got out front. He and his wife drove by slowly in their Toyota and gave us all high fives as he drove by. So I got to give a member of the quorum of the twelve a high five this week. I actually got a video of it too that Ill send. So that was awesome!!

Anyways this week was cool too because yesterday we got to do a Skype lesson with a member of the church in Argentina. His name was Victor and we just talked/taught him for 30 minutes. For studying Spanish for only four weeks I was actually able to understand like 75% of what was said and got to share some thoughts with him. I told him that I played football and Lacrosse in high school. I wasnt sure if he knew what lacrosse was so I asked him and did... so Im hoping at least once while im down there ill see some kids playing lacrosse or passing. Anyways it was awesome, our teacher, Sister Richards was watching us giving our lesson and stuff and i looked at her right before we were going to say closing prayer and she was crying. Afterwards she said that she felt the spirit really strong and that was why. I also think that she just misses her mission because been back for like a year from Uraguay. But anyway I loved the skype session and I think we will have at least one more before we leave in like 13 days.

So I think about you guys a lot and I love hearing what you are all doing. I think thats hilarious that you lost Franklin. That turtle is literally going to end his life on a high thats for sure. Asher looks totally different from 4 weeks ago. I sure do miss him. Elder Morris got a hair cut today and it is right next to the health clinic so I thought I could just go in there real quick cause I have some warts on my left foot. And it ended up being like a 20 minute thing of insurance and I will need to go see like a wart specialist Friday. So Ill get to go on another field trip away from the MTC. The first one was actually today. A BYU officer came and took me to campus and had to redo my fingerprints. It was kinda fun cause I got to do something different. and then Friday Ill get shuttled somewhere to get the warts removed. So thatll be fun. The Gym was just closed last week cause they were refinishing the floor. But it was open and thats where we have the devotionals. It holds like 2200 people in it so its good size. I did get the DEARELDER packages and Kenzies package. I loved them. I didnt eat the cinnamon rolls though because Im not huge into sweets but I set them out one morning for missionaries to eat that didnt want to dress up to go to the cafeteria. And Idk about Ensigns. I dont have time to ready them now but I will on the 11 hour flight to Buenos Ares. A couple things I do want is some Cologne to out on now and then. Not an everyday thing but it would be nice to have. I kinda want some nutraul color Stance socks. Just like 2 pairs of Grey or black mix. Kenzie should pick them out. I would like some banana bars if you want to send that. OH and Im going to send a package back with some long sleeves and other things I wont need and Im going to include my suit pants. Dad should know why but there is a thread that it sticking out that I can fix and I acciedently popped a stitch on the left pocket and instead of sowing it up... since we have another pair of the grew suit pants, just send those please. I put my suit in today for dry cleaning.

Anyway this week was awesome and even tuesdays night devotional was awesome but Ill just throw som speratic quotes down cause Im running out of time. "Dont let others setermine your happiness"
"Your success in ANYTHING you do is based of of your diligence NOT your intelligence."
"Close your ears and hearts to anything negative in life."

Loved all of those and thought I would share those. I love you all and hope you can enjoy your week.

Love,
Elder Keicher
I forgot to mention that I saw clint this week. I saw a kid from his zone in the cafiteria and he took me to see him. I only talked to him for like 3 minutes

Be Still My Soul. Week 3 in the MTC

Well Hello,

This week was a great week. Nothing specific made it great. Just overall progress and excitement to leave. I am exactly half way through my stay here at the MTC. So yesterday we had 3 lessons, 2 with members and 1 with our "investigator". And I basically had to teach all three by myself because Elder Morris had to be with another Elder in our district who had a doctors appointment. So it was just me and Phillips teaching. And the only thing Phillips contributed was the closing prayers. It was pretty rough. I was so nervous going into them cause its hard enough teaching in English by yourself let alone in Spanish. But afterwards I felt like it was good for me to do that and I grew from it. So this morning we all got to go to the temple for the first time since being here. Its been closed for the past 2 weeks. So we arrived at the Provo Temple this morning at 8:30, ate breakfast there in there cafeteria and then did their 9:20 session. It was nice going there cause I could just sit there for 2 hours and pretty much do nothing haha. We are doing something from 7am-10pm all day. No breaks except to eat. It gets pretty tiring. I definitely dont have trouble sleeping at night. but an Elder in our district has only been getting ike 2-3 hours a sleep a night. He was the one that was at the doctors with Morris. He is kinda having a rough time cause his mom also broke her back last week and had to get emergency surgery. He has got to call home twice already. Kinda jealous but kinda not because I dont want to have a reason to call home haha. So excited for Macquel and Rick. Thatll be awesome. Definitely will be a totally different experience than Asher... he set the bar too high I say haha.

Moms Questions:

-I will wear my black suit when I get my grey one dry cleaned but before I leave im going to send it back cause I dont need it as well as some long sleeves. I have like 5 long sleeve shirts and I only need like 3. I havent even wore a short sleeve yet. I will probably get the 5 CTR shirts I got in the mail and have them driy cleaned cause they are in their packaging.

-But I havent opened the black suit case yet.

-I have seen Janae twice and talked very briefly and havent talked to Clint yet. I will have to send him an email.
-I do my laundry while I write these emails(Ill send a picture).

-A couple things I want is pictures of you guys. Elder morris has a really cool tie where it has a picture of his family on this inside(Ill send a picture) I kinda want one of those. The website for that is 21rhinos.com
any snacks is always appreciated haha

-Language is coming slowly. But im not overly worried about it. I just cant wait to be surrounded by it in Argentina.

Last night we had a devotional and I sang in the choir and we sang "Be Still My Soul". It was such a powerful devotional. The speaker was another Emeritus Seventy and my favorite part of his talk was when he said, "It is through trials, troubles, and messing up that we come to KNOW God and build a relationship with him." I mean obviously we need to pray but I think its difficult for most people in the world and even in our church to recognize trials as blessings and opportunities to build our faith and come unto Christ. Its all about perspective. In the moment it sucks and no one will every be like, "Oh yes a trail." The growth and blessings come as we overcome sin and trials and only after the fact to we see the benefits. Apparently the General Authorities get the month of July to themselves to be with their families, so looks like I wont see one here before I leave. More Emeritus ones but those are fine I guess;) Next week the choir is going to sing with the Nashville Tribute Band that Gma went a saw. It will be apart of one of the devotionals I guess.

Well thatll be it from me this week. Hope everyone is doing fine. Love you all

-Elder Corbin Keicher

Salsa Party!! Week 2 in the MTC

Hello Fam,

Week two is in the books. It feels like I have been here for forever. I really enjoy receiving all your Dear Elder letters during the week. Its honestly nice just hearing from you guys during the week. Im jealous of the missionaries who have iPads cause they can check there email throughout the week but can only email out on their Pday. Anyway I found a solution to using the salsa. Last week I just came out of my room with the salsa a chips and went to the middle area where everyone hangsout on couches and we had a 10 person salsa party. A couple Elders went into their rooms and got their chips and salsa they had and brought them out and we all ate until the salsa was gone. It was a lot of fun. On Saturday, July 2nd was the stadium of fire concert at BYUs stadium so we had a devotional that night and then afterward went into the parking lot and watched the firework show form it. It was fun but kinda of a lame firework show.

Anyways this past week has been another roller coaster. Ive strangely enough grown to like running during exercise time. I try to run a mile every exercise time. It relieves a lot of stress. After I run I like to go to these certain stationary bikes that have a nice view of the mountains. Its fun to just sit there and watch the cars drive by. My companions are still weird. But im starting to get use to it so its not too bad. After dinner one night we were back in our classroom and Morris wasnt settling down into study and I really didnt want to put up with it for the rest of our study time for that night so i said a prayer. after wards I remembered that there was a mormon message out by Jeffrey R Holland that I hadnt seen yet so I went to the computer and pulled it up and told every one to sit down and I played it. We then talked about it after wards for like 40 minutes and then I got to finish my study time after that in peace. The language is coming slowly. As of yesterday My companionship and I have taught 9 lessons. Two of those was to members. The member lessons we give are fun because I dont feel as much pressure. But its been frustrating because Elder Phillips never says a word the whole time. It is just Elder Morris and I talking. And everytime we try to tell Elder phillips that he needs to participate he yells at us. So its been hard to get him involved. But it was funny because we had a 70ish year old lady as one of our member lessions and at the end she looked to elder phillips and was like, "Are you going to say anything?" He just sat there and said that he has only been studying spanish for 2 weeks and I was just sitting there like "yeah same bro.". But I didnt actually say that obviously. Then after our lesson our teacher(who can watch and listen to our lessons through a camera) told him he needed to start participating. So it was nice someone of "authority" tell him to participate.

So I did see Clint on Saturday because during out devotional for the4of July, they had missionaries carry flags in from everywhere missionaries were going and Clint was carrying the American flag. So I got to see him but didnt get to talk to him. I did receive my CTR clothes and all my clothes are fine.

The devotionals here are my favorite part about being here. Last night, a guy by the name of Marlin K Jensen of the emeritus seventy spoke (not sure what emeritus means). But it was awesome. He posed a question that i loved he asked, "How do you get from a partical of faith to exceedingly great faith?" He then answered his own question with Alma 32:27-29. He then continued to say that "...our faith right now has a shelf life. Make sure you continuely work towards building your faith." He then related it to missionary work saying, "Faith cannot override a persons agency." I just thought that was cool and found it interesting. I took a video of my residence so hopefully I can get that posted on Drop box.

I honestly just want to go to Argentina now. I dont feel ready but I dont think I will every feel ready to be thrown into a foreign country so i just want to get started. But time will pass and I will get there eventually. I just hope I can learn as much as I can and overcome the distractions. I love reading the Book of Mormon every day. Its not something i every really did every day before and my personal study time is kind of like my exercise time. A time for me to relax.
I hope everyone is doing fine. I love you all and hope you have an awesome July. OH! a missionary in my district, Elder Hannah told me today that there is an Argentina restaurant in Bosie that is ran by a guy from resistencia and said that there is really good empinadas there. Maybe check that out if you can, I might have the name of it next week for you. Anyway enjoy your week and know that i am thinking of you all. ETTE
