Freaking Rain

This week was a little different. First off E'Butler and I went on splits with the district leader so I went so a different area and was with an Elder named Elder Cleto. It was my first experience with a Latino missionary. It was interesting. Except EÇleto isnt a normal Latino. He is from an indigounous trib in Paraguay and had to learn spanish as a 2nd Language. His normal language is called "Nieacle" and I am not sure if it is even a language that is written because he didnt have any books or stuff written in his language. But he has been in the mission for a year and a half so he knows spanish. But it was a different experience. But the district leader, EÇletos companion is E Olivera, and he is an Argentine and is actually hilarious. He has a bunch of signs in his and E Cletos apartment that are pretty funny. He knows pretty good english too. But for lunch with E Cleto he bought 5 hamburgers for 90 pesos or $6.5 US dollers. Anyway after being with E Cleto for 24 hours it made me really apperciate having E Butler as a Companion/Trainer.  It would be so hard if I couldnt communicate with my companion. It rained ALOT this week and it was pretty cold. So we couldnt talk or have many lessons this week because when it rains here... nobody wants to do ANYTHING. Its equivalent to it snowing half a foot of snow in America. Everybody just stays home, drinks tea, and doesnt go anywhere. But we had a lesson with a guy named Herñan Saturday night and it was my best lesson. I still didnt understand much but I could understand a lot more than usual. I also talked a little more than usual and really felt the spirit throughout the whole lesson. Anyway it Sunday was also a lot of fun too. It was fast sunday and we had the Stake President in our branch. It was kinda funny though because the stake president felt like he had to have  the last word in every meeting we had. But during 3rd hour a senior couple from Buenos Aires gave a lesson on "Capilla Abiertas" or Open houses. Here they hold open houses at church buildings every once an a while and is pretty much just an oppurtunity for people to come and see what mormons are all about. Missiornaries are there and do little presentations on basic gospel principles, explain the rooms in the church and explain baptism. And then there are usually the relief society pres that talks about the relief society. But it was pretty cool.

Oh. We were at a ladies house tuesday or something I dont quite remember but her name is Eva, and she has been meeting with the missionaries for 2 years. She was cooking some tortafrita for us and was showing us some missionaries that she is friends with on facebook. Anyway I told her to look me up and I added myself as a friend. Then like 2 days later at like 10pm she called us and told E Butler and I that she had talked and messaged Mom a little bit. Kinda  funnt, but she isnt a member just a lady who is friends with the missionaries. She is like 60 I think.

This week I we ran into a lot of people who were inactive. And it really bothered me. There was a guy that came and talked to us one day and we didnt know who he was, but we soon found out he had been baptised a little over a year ago. He went and got his BOM and he was trying to give the book of mormon back to us. He was saying "I already got baptised I dont need this anymore". and E Butler tried to explain to him that it was his and that he can still read and learn. But the guy just said, "But im catholic". He obviously didnt understand anything and whoever baptised him was just trying to baptise him instead of really teaching him the gospel and converting the guy. But I was so confused during the whole contact cause I just saw a guy smoking a cigarette and then he went into his house and came back with a BOM and had pictures of his baptism and was saying things like "| am catholic". Thankfully Butler clarified everything for me afterwards haha.
But we had a better incounter with a less active last night in the street. It was actually kind of funny cause we were just walking at like 8:30pm in the street and this guy came up to us and introduced himself like this, "Hey Elders, Im Matrïn. I am less active". So we talked to him for a little bit. He said that he was baptised in 2002 and has been in and out of activity the whole time. He has a girlfriend right now. So I asked him if he wanted to help us with lessons. And he seemed really excited to do that. He said he didnt know why he didnt go to church anymore. So hopefully through him coming with us on lessons it will help investigators and we could teach his girlfriend or he could give us more refrences. we will see.

But anyways I am doing fine. It has been pretty chilly and rainy here. I hope you all are doing fine. I hope Kelsey enjoys her marathon... if its even possible to enjoy running 26.2 miles. Have a great week. CHO!

Elder Keicher

Breast Feeding on a Motorcycle

Hola Familia,

I got to break out my boots yesterday and today. Its been raining since it started raining after church yesterday. And more than half the streets are dirt so that just turns to mud. But things are just going as normal here. Every day is different and the same all at once. We do the same things and go and visit people and contact and walk and pretty much have the same schedule everyday. But the rollercoaster of emotions is what makes everyday different. I was just looking back at my journal entries from the past week and it follows a good day/bad day pattern. Its actually kind of funny to look at. But it is so true. Somedays i can see progress and feel good and some days its a battle to get through. And most of it is my understanding of whats going on. Seeing progression and understanding of the language is very difficult at this stage so I just feel stagnant. But I loved something I read the other day in Alma 32 28-43 which is when Alma compares understanding and comprehending the spirit to a seed. And I really enjoyed that and I "likenned the scriptures unto myself" and applied that to my comprehension of spanish. Everyday I need to nurture my seed and one day it will grow into a tree. The work here in my area of Argentina is interesting. It is just weird to see how the church is different in a different part of the world. Yesterday we had 54 people at church which according to Elder Butler was the most he had seen in that branch in the 3 months he has been here. But I am doing the "my first 12 weeks" trainning and some stuff we just cant apply because it's Argentina. We dont have ward mission leaders or Ward Council or anything. Elder Butler and I just meet with the branch presedency once a week and do like a little coorilation meeting. And anothering thing that is hard to apply is working with members, cause there isnt that many members. But the members here are way cool.

I didnt take that many pictures this week... Oops... Ill take some more this week. I am going to take a picture of all the freaking trash here. People here just throw trash everywhere. Its disgusting. A couple culter things that I dont think I have noted yet was all the freaking Motorcyles here. Everyone rides "motos". And the things people can do on them I never knew was possible. Just a few.... Drive their family of 5 on a moto, Breast feed on a moto, Carry roofing material on a moto, etc. It is just different to see. We have a dog that follows E Butler and I around when we walk. We named him Mr. Tummnes. Just a stray dog. Thats another thing.... dogs outnumber people here 5-1. But this dog will follow us literally everywhere. he even trys to follow us in markets. But it turned ugly when we went to a appointment with a lady we had contacted a couple weeks ago and all the dogs in this neighbor hood just attacked Mr. Tummnes. And it actually was effecting our lesson cause we couldnt even start for 10 minutes cause it was SO loud with dogs barking. Finally Mr. Tummnes left and we could have a little lesson. But we just sat there and watched various dogs attack Mr. Tummnes. Unfortunately Mr. Tummnes hasnt followed us since that incident. Thats about as exciting as it got this week. We got a refrence for a guy who lives in our area and we went and talked to him and apparently he has been going to church in Resistencia with his friend for a year. He even was apart of the ward choir. But he hasnt been baptised. So we were talking and Elder Butler asked him if he would be baptised and he said that he would like too but that he wanted his friend to baptise him.... who just left on a mission..... so he would have to wait 2 years. Soooo we will have to talk to him about not waiting two years cause thats a long time. But he left for Buenos Ares and wont be back for another couple days.

The food isnt anything crazy to take note of... at least I dont think. Its just normal food. Just cooked and presented a little differently. But I have yet to eat Argentinan BBQ which i have only heard great things from. All my clothes are in great shape. I havent bought any souviners yet but I will get a futbol jersey soon. And I will have to get a Mate(mah-tay) cup cause thats all people drink here. Our Lunch calender looks pretty good. We have average 3 lunches a week which is pretty good. But I think transfers are in 2 weeks cause we just started week 5. But I will most likely stay here with E Butler. I dont know really if I want to stay or go. My area is actaully quite big so I wouldnt mine going to a smaller one but I dont really know what other areas are like. So I really dont have an opinion.

Anyway I loved hearing from all of you. Looks like all is going well and you are all keeping busy... which is good. The house looks beautiful. Like always keep me updated. I love you all. Tenga una buena semana!

Love,
Elder Keicher

My First Kiss!

Hey Fam,

YA! I was with Elder Trumbo Wednesday for exchanges and we went to visit a lady and she came to the fence and let us in to talk. And usually here you just shake hands like normal. But this lady stuck her hand out to shake and so I shook her hand and then she went and gave me like a cheek kiss on both my cheeks. It was so weird. Its what Jimmy Fallon does everytime when a guest comes onto the show. But it was just really weird. Pretty sure that is against the rules. I just felt awkward. But Elder Trumbo was just unphased. Afterwards he was like "yeah that happens sometimes, its weird". But it was cool to be with Elder Trumbo. He leaves in Octber so I got to fill him in on what has been happening the past two years. He is from Southern California. He just talked to me about the mission and gave me some good advice and also talked about how his parents are going to come pick him up and he was talking about how he was going to take them around the mission for 2ish days before he flys back to the states. But yeah he was trunky.
This week was pretty tranquilo. We had a multi-zone meeting on Tuesday so that was fun. We were at the mission office in Resistencia all day. I got to see two Elders from my MTC zone there so that was cool to talk to them. But I really liked the multi-zone meeting even though I didnt really understand what they were talking about it was still fun. Today Elder Butler and I went to Wal-Mart. There are only 2 wal-marts in the mission and one of them is right outside our area. So we went there and I bought some stuff that isn't found in Fontana. I got like sausages and other various meats, and some club crackers. But it was a little different than walmarts in the states. I had to show a copy of my pass port to use my debit card. But anyway it has actually been pretty cold the past couple days here. The first part of the week it was freaking humid and the past 3 days we have been using a little space heater in our room at night. And our hot water is still broken so showers are still ice cold. But one of our investigators (Pablo) is coming by today to look at the shower head cause he is a electrician. So hopefully that gets fixed. This investigator, Pablo, and his family are for sure getting baptised. The only thing stopping them is getting married. Him and his.....partner? I'll just call her his wife have been together for 15 years now and they have 2 boys. One is Augusten who is 12 and the other I forget his name but he is like 6. But they just never got married which is actually like the culter here. No-one is married. But they are trying to get married right now. They have to go to like an office in Resistencia and schudule a date to get married. So once they do that they will get baptised. They are a really cool family. We had a lesson last night with them and Pablo was talking and most of the time, I dont understand what is being said so I just sit there and look interested. But I usually can kind of tell what is being said. And Pablo was talking and I could tell he was talking about me but i didnt know what he was saying. I felt kind of awkward so I just smiled. But after the lesson I asked Elder Butler what he was saying about me and apparently Pablo was like "I wish he (me) could understand what im saying cause I am speaking from my heart." So that pretty much sums up the mission so far haha. But it is what it is.

Saturday we had a lunch appointment and we showed up to the members house at 12 and the lady told us she needed 30 more minutes to clean and finish cooking. So Elder Butler and I went and took pictures. Cause here during the siesta (12pm-430pm) noone will talk to you. That is when we eat lunch and then do companionship study. So I got some cool pictures this week. And I took pictures of the kitchen and bathroom haha and there is a picture of Elder Regan who was with Elder Butler on exchanges. And as far as money. I'll be fine. We come to the city every P-day and I buy a lot of food for the week here and then in Fontana I can buy bread milk and other stuff. But I try to only use my card in Resistencia because I trust it there. I dont trust using my card in Fontana and most places are just little markets or stores in people's houses and they only take cash. But I manage my money well. We take all of our money out in cash at the begining of the month just because cash is the way people live here. Its just not as advanced down here. Cash is the primary source of buying things. Anyway Elder Butlers parents dont have Facebook. But we are getting along. He isnt the biggest talker but thats fine. As far as water, every apartment has a water filter hooked up to the sink so I fill my water bottle up each day. And members serve water usually for meals. I havent got the missionary package yet. Ill let you know when I do. And as far as crime goes i'm not sure. I've talked to Elder Butler and he said he has never been robbed and on exchanges I was with Elder Trumbo and he said he has never been robbed either and he goes home in October. But Trumbo just said that you just need to have street smarts and you'll be fine. So I think I'll be alright. I feel safe. I might buy a backpack because all the other missionaries have backpacks here. So i might do that. The one thing that I was thinking that I want is a calendar. I want a 2017 calendar and 2018 calendar. So thats the only thing I can think of that I want.
But anyway thats all I got for this week. I love you all so much. Chosito

Love,
Elder Keicher

....Elder Ketchup

What's up Fam,

First off I appreciate all of your emails. They are so fun to read and I like to hear about what you are all doing. This week was pretty good. Except the hot water broke last Tuesday so I've been taking freezing cold showers every morning.... it sucks. It's honestly the worst. And it probably wont be fixed for a while... so cold showers for days I guess. The water before was actually bettter than I expected. but now its ice. but anyway It got humid yesterday for the first time and confirmed the fact that I hate humidity. So the summer will be a lot of fun. Every Thursday we do like a correlation meeting with the branch presidency and as we were leaving the Branch Presidency assigned me to speak on Sunday. So Friday and Saturday during my personal study time I had to prepare a 10 minute talk on missionary work. I actually wasnt as nervous as I would be for a talk in english cause here everyone knows Im a little newbe American, So there isnt as much pressure as there normally would be. But it was good. I used an Ensign so that helped me. But I definitely feel better this week about everything. I mean I definitley am still overwhelmed at how much I have to learn, but I created a plan and am just going to focus on staying on my plan and staying productive each day. Because I have this mountain I need to climb and I cant be worried about climbing the mountain in one day. So I just have to take each day. I always like P-day cause obviously I get a break from everything but I also get to talk to other missionaries and just talk to other people that are new. And the other missionaries always give me advice and I can see where I will be one day. So its all good.

The food situation is good. I eat every night when I get back to the apartment. I usually make eggs or cereal... and eat chips or something. So im eatting lunch and dinner. Breakfast... I eat a little orange or grab a handle full of dry cereal as im walking out the door so I think thats going well. And Money definitly goes farther here so that $13 charge that you saw last week got me 1.5 liter coke, doritos bag, cereal, and 4 AAA batteries. But
the thing is, is we get about $1800 pesos a month and that is around just over a $100 dollars. So I have to learn to stretch my money to last amonth. I think I will use my debit card once a week at Subway for lunch on P-days. So there is a charge on that for this week. But I dont think there is anything that I want. I will probably know if I want anything much later in the mission. So dont worry about anything that I want right now cause I cant think of anything. But Im sure things will come as I get farther into the mission. The mission offered me sheets the first day but I told them I already had some so I didnt take theirs. And that pillow in the picture is the pillow they gave me. So my pillow I brought is still in the packaging. I probably wont start using it until after my training. But like I said the weather is starting to warm up. The bugs are only bad in the evenings. So we apply bug spray around 5-6ish at night. But there isnt any weird bugs or anything. Any my companions name is Eric Butler. And he is from Brigham City. He was a swimmer in high school. Thats about all I know about him haha. And yeah the town we are in is called Fotana and the area in the mission is called Fontanegro. Overall the language is coming. I can definitley tell a difference from my first couple days here until now. First couple days or just that week everything sounded like giberish. And no I can start to hear words. Not nessicarly understand the words but I can hear people a little better. But I think if I stick to my plan I will be just fine. I am just writting like 15ish word every day in my planner and trying to learn 15 words each day. And then during language study I do activities or read this text book thing that the MTC gave me. So hopefully with that combo I will start progressing and learning. I guess I'll find out.

Any way everything is going well for me. Nothing too crazy or funny this week. This week I am going on a division with the zone leaders so maybe where ever I go they will have warm water. But the guy im splitting with is in his last 2 transfers. He just got his flight plans today to go home. So that will be fun to be with him for a day or two. Oh also a guy in church or in the branch calls me Elder Ketchup.. but overall people here butcher the name the same way people in america would butcher the name. As far as the actual work that Elder Butler and I are doing, its going pretty well. We havent had any investigators come to church yet though. There is a family that will get baptised once they get married. Once they get married they will get baptized. They are really cool. There is another little family which is a husband and wife (i think they are married) and they have a 2ish year old daughter and they own a bakery. And usually after we teach them they give us a little pastery. And Saturday they gave us this pastery thing that was bread with powder sugar on it and in the middle was this stuff called ''Dulce de Leche'' which is pretty much just non-sticky carmel. SO good. But overall its going good. I hope you all are doing good. Keep me updated on all your adventures. I think about you guys all the time. Stay cool.

Love,

Elder Keicher

Primero Semana en el Campo

Buenos Dias!!

Well my life is definitely a lot different now. haha But i am here in Argentina. My area I'm assigned too is called Fontanegro but the city is called Fontana. It is right next to Resistencia. The mission office is in the center of Resistencia and I am about a 15 minute bus ride to the mission office. So we had our flight situation which was fun. For the flight from Atlanta to Buenos Aires I sat in the middle in the middle so that wasnt too fun cause it was a 10 hour flight and I only got like an hour and a half hours of sleep. And like I said there were 2 missionaries that threw their trac cell phones away while getting off and that looks pretty suspisious when 2 americans dressed in white shirts and ties are thowing cell phones away so all us missionaries got swarmed withArgentinan airport officials and they all took our passports so that we wouldnt leave. And it took a while to explain to them who we were and why those elders were throwing cell phones away. But it turned out okay.
Then when I boarded my plane to resistencia I sat next to a guy named Maurio who lived in Argentina and i talked to him the whole flight. He owned like 20 ice cream shops around Argentina. I shared with him what I was doing in Argentina and we just talked about what we believed. He was Evangelic and at the end of my flight I got his address and name and gave it to the office elders to use as a refrence to who ever is serving in his area. Then after us missionaries got off the flight we meet President and Sister Franco and they took us to the mission office. We ate empanadas and then stayed in a hotel that night. Wedneeday we all got interviewed by Presdient Franco but it was only like a 6 minute thing. But he is super nice and cool. I got my tainer, his name is Elder Butler. He has been out for a year and is from Utah. So I am glad i got an american trainer. But he is cool and we get along. He is 19 and graduated same year as me. Idk what else to say he is pretty normal so thats good haha.

Anyways my area like i said is just on the outskirts of the city of Resistencia. But Elder Butler said that this mission is the poorest part of Argentina. And I have definitely seen that. Its like you see pictures of poor places all the time but its a whole different thing to be walking the streets and see it in person. The church in my area is alright. We have a branch and on Suday there were 30ish people there. But the members are awesome... at least I think so I cant understand them or really anyone so I just go off of what I think and what Elder Bulter tells me. But I have been fed lunch everyday I've been here except last Thursday. The food is different but its good. Its nothing really too crazy, just meat and potatoes and Pomela which is gratefruit. And I am going to have to get use to that juice cause thats all we drink. But its a little different than the gratefruit in America. Its yellow and doesnt taste as bad cause Im not a fan of grapefruit. But today we are in the city cause we had to go to the misision office to get rent for the month and then we ate at Subway. Funny story. I was eatting lunch there and of course I got a coke with my sandwich (my first coke here) and when we were leavng I went and refilled it up and got a lid and as I was leaving the lady from subway started yelling at me. And I just stared at her cause I had no idea what she said and Elder Butler was at the door waiting for me. So I didnt now what to say so I just said "esta bein, buenos dias" (Im good, have a good day) and left. The subway lady just rolled her eyes at me and went back to work. I was so confused but elder butler told me just a little bit ago that she said I only bought one drink and that I needed to pay for refilling my drink. So I thought that was funny. Oops!

But yeah we pretty much walk everywhere and we use the bus as well. My shoes are fine. I will probably polish them today. My warts are fine. Today is the first day I started to apply the medicine the doctor gave me. The people in my area.... or just argentinans are weird. I dont really understand them yet. Some I can tell are really nice. But we will have lessons with some people and I have no idea what is being said but it always seems like they are uninterested just by looking at their facial expressions and then after ward Elder Butler will be like " well that went great" and go on to say the things they said and I am always surprised cause I just have no idea whats going on. Thats honestly the hardest part and biggest trail for me right now. That I cant contirbute really anything and cant understand people. I just dont know how I will be able to be an effective missionary when I cant really do anything. But I just remind myself that this is my first week in the field. I cant wait until I can communicate and understand the people and not feel like the language is such a burden. Its hard to imagine that being a reality now but I know that there are other missionaries who are probably worse off than me and that eventually this will pass cause I am definitely not the first missionary to go through this and that I wont be the last either.

The weather is actually pretty nice right now. Its nice and sunny and not very humid. But my companion tells me that the heat will suck so cant wait for that. You can send mail to the mission office. Thats the way to do it. But I cant use pouch to send mail to you guys. But you can still send pouch to me. But send then letters or envelop packages to the mission office. Thats the best place for that. But like I said earlier I am serving in Fontana.I dont have a specific address but the main street in the town is Av. Alvear. Idk if that will help. But our church is on the street. I got to see a little bit of the Olympics on sunday for like 10 minutes when we went to lunch at a part member familys house. The TV had it on while they were finishing cooking. I got to see a little bit of mens vollyball and a little bit of gymnastics. So that was cool to see that. I didnt even know that it had started. They dont really care too much for the olympics here. Oh and its a rule that I cant play soccer... so wont be doing that really. But anyway I'll go. It was so nice hearing from you all. I hope you guys are doing great. I think of you guys a lot. Have a great week! Adios

Spread Some Light in This Dark World. Week 5 in the MTC (last week)

Last email from the USA(hopefully),

Hey fam,

So if the FBI thing goes through in the next couple days I will be leaving for Argentina on Monday. Everybody got their travel plans last Friday except for me. But if my plans are the same, I will be leaving the MTC at around 8 and the flight from SLC will leave I think around 2ish. Then we will get the Atlanta at around 7ish. Then our flight from Atlanta will leave at around 10:30ish and get to Buenos Aires 11 hours later. So ill probably be calling you guys from the Salt Lake Airport. But my plans could be different since my plane tickets are being bought like 4 days before I leave I dont know. Ill try to let you know if things are different when I get my plans.

So I got the carry on Kenzie dropped off. And I did get the card reader but I dont think I'll need any new SD readers. I already have 2 and Im just going to upload every week to drop box and organize them in folders there. I got the Stance socks today and they are awesome, thanks for doing that. I dont think I need anything else before I leave. I will be sending my package back to you guys either tomorrow or Friday. I am so STOKED to finally leave. I am starting to get nervous though because we just learned subjunctive in Spanish the other day, and its what people use like 70% of the time in spanish and its pretty difficult. haha So my first 12 weeks should be fun. Ill try to tell stories of me saying weird stuff to people. I already told an "investigator" that "Through Christ they can be forgiven of their fish." Pecado=sin and pescado=fish. So itll definitely be fun haha. I go in tomorrow to have the foot doctor (Dr. Jarmillo) look at my warts before I leave. He injected this like stuff that kills them and they are starting to turn black. But idk if they are ready to be taken out yet. He told me you usually have to wait 3 weeks to let the stuff kill the wart completely so Ill see what he says tomorrow about that. I saw Clint again yesterday at dinner before Choir so I ate with him. It was nice and we got to talk a little longer. I got my hair cut today and this lady that was like on a break was showing the lady cutting my hair these videos of baby Pandas. So that was kinda fun. I got to watch a facebook video of baby Pandas while getting my haircut. OH and last week an Elder in my district who has been having a hard time got the chance to do a 2 hour "companionship" study with his dad at the MTC. but I had to be his companions companion during all of it. And when we went to pick him up Elder Wiggens wanted to get a picture with his dad before he left. So his dad gave me his phone to take a picture and I felt so weird holding an Iphone. AND ITS ONLY BEEN 5 WEEKS. Like touching the screen felt so weird. I havent had any withdrawals from not having a phone and honestly I havent really thought about it and maybe thats why it felt so weird.

But anyway I loved this week. For Pioneer day in Utah, we had the National Tribute band as our Sunday devotional. It was actually weird because half the time it felt like a concert...and it was the sabbeth. But it was still so awesome. Besides Elder Bednar, I think that was my favorite devotional. We watched a really cool Elder Holland talk last night in which he gave to the MTC last year. It is entitled "Open Your Mouth". In it he talked about Joseph Smith and the first vision. He said, "To prevent the restoration of the gospel on the Earth, Satan exhorted all of his power that he had on Joshep Smith. If Satan had the power to kill someone, he wouldve. But he doesnt have the ability to do that. So he did the most powerful he can, he bound his tounge(JSH1:15) so he could not speak." Then Elder Holland so graceful stated, "OPEN YOUR MOUTH". So that is pretty centered to missionaries but that can apply to anyone. It relates to relationships, marriages, and being a member missionary. Opening your mouth doesnt have to mean to delcare repentance to others. But open your mouth and spread joy and happiness in this dark world. The world has enough sarcastic people and messed up people and people who wont spread joy and nice things. Its seems every other day I somehow hear of things happining in the world and its disgusting. Spread happiniess. BE CHARITABLE. Go out of your way to do something nice for a stranger. Thats all I got this week. Talk  to you Monday.  Ill probably not be able to email next week but the next one will be from another hemisphere. ETTE

Love,

Elder Corbin Keicher
